A few months ago, a woman contacted me to inquire about my cello lessons.
She explained to me that she had always dreamed of learning this instrument, but that several people around her had told her that she was probably too old to start.
She didn't want to become a professional cellist. She simply wanted to learn to play for pleasure and fulfill a long-held dream.
I told her that yes, it was entirely possible !
Today, she is learning her first pieces and progressing every week!
Many adults ask themselves the same question before starting: can you really learn the cello as an adult?
The answer is yes: it is perfectly possible to start playing the cello at any age, with some advantages and a few specific challenges...!
Welcome to my blog! I'm Clara, a professional cellist and cello teacher. Here I share tips and reflections on learning this instrument.
In this article, we will look at:
Why it is possible to learn the cello as an adult
the advantages that adults have in learning an instrument
the benefits of musical practice on the brain
the difficulties often encountered by adult beginners
How to find time to practice despite daily obligations?
Let's go!
Why is it possible to learn the cello as an adult?
Many people think that you have to start playing music at a very young age to learn an instrument.
This is partly due to the fact that the vast majority of professional musicians begin their training during childhood.
And yes, starting young offers many advantages. But that doesn't mean it's impossible later on.
It all depends on your goal. Learning the cello for pleasure is perfectly possible as an adult.
Many adults begin playing the cello at 30, 40, or even 60 years old.
And they gradually discover the joy of playing.
Why is this possible?
Learning an instrument depends mainly on three things:
regularity
patience
an efficient practice method
The main difference between a child and an adult comes mainly from the time available to practice, and sometimes from the way one views one's own progress.
The adult brain is perfectly capable of learning and creating new brain connections.
Learning the cello as an adult becomes an enriching musical experience and a true personal pleasure.
The vast majority of my students began playing the cello as adults. Many had dreamed of this for a long time and are often surprised to see how much progress is possible!
The advantages of learning the cello as an adult
Contrary to popular belief, adults possess several advantages...!
Strong personal motivation
Adults usually choose to learn an instrument because they genuinely want to.
This personal choice often creates a very strong motivation that helps to remain consistent in practice.
A better understanding ability
Adults generally understand certain technical or musical explanations more quickly.
They can analyze their movements, reflect on their posture and more easily understand certain working principles.
A more personal relationship with music
For many adults, practicing the cello becomes a moment for themselves.
In an often busy daily life, playing music can offer a space for disconnection, calm and creativity.
The benefits of playing music on the brain
Playing an instrument engages many brain functions simultaneously.
Playing the cello requires, for example:
coordination between the two hands
active listening
memory
concentration
These different activities strongly stimulate the brain and promote brain plasticity .
Learning an instrument as an adult becomes both an artistic activity and an excellent mental exercise.
An activity that allows you to meet new people

Music is also a social activity.
Even as a beginner, it's possible to meet other musicians through:
amateur ensembles
internships or workshops
musical projects
Many adults are discovering a new community around music and sharing music! I will soon be organizing group classes in my classroom , with the specific aim of allowing my students to meet and share a musical moment together, because that is the whole point of making music... to share it!
The difficulties often encountered by adult beginners
Starting to play the cello as an adult can also present some challenges.
Lack of time
Between work, family and various obligations, finding time to practice can be difficult.
I have always had enormous respect for my students who have busy schedules and yet still find time to practice!
The body must adapt to new movements
Playing the cello uses muscles, tendons, and joints that are rarely used to this extent in everyday life.
At first, you might feel a little stiff or uncomfortable.
With time and practice, the body gradually adapts and the movements become more natural and fluid.
Impatience regarding the results
When you start an instrument as an adult, it can be difficult to accept becoming a beginner again in a new activity.
We often want to make rapid progress and hear results immediately.
But learning an instrument is a gradual process, with many small steps...!
With a little patience and regular practice, progress will eventually appear.
How to find time to practice the cello
The good news is that you don't need to practice for several hours a day to make progress when you're starting out!
Short but regular sessions are often much more effective.
Prioritize regularity
For example :
15 to 20 minutes per day
or a few sessions spread throughout the week
Regularity helps to maintain achievements, create the necessary muscular and joint flexibility, and progress more easily.
Incorporating the practice into a small routine can help a lot.
Some people play in the morning before work. Others prefer to practice in the evening or enjoy a quiet moment during the day.
The most important thing is to find a rhythm that naturally fits into your daily life.
These little moments of practice often become a real moment of pleasure in the day!
In this article, we've seen that it's entirely possible to learn the cello as an adult. While starting young offers certain advantages, many adults discover the joy of playing each year and progress steadily.
Learning an instrument requires time, patience and regular practice, but it can also become a source of pleasure and personal fulfillment.
And you, have you ever dreamed of playing the cello?
